FIGURE
Roller figure skating demands that its skaters combine a careful balance of precision, strength, and artistry into a single, impressive performance. Skaters of all ages can participate individually or as part of a club or team. Skaters enter events in Singles, Pairs, Figures, Solo Dance, Team Dance, Precision, or Show skating. They are judged on content and manner of performance. They may choose to skate in a variety of categories or concentrate on only one.
SPEED
Regardless of age, speed skaters share a determination to race as fast and as far as they can. This youthful enthusiasm is matched by the sport of speed skating, a non-contact sport discipline demanding a blend of quickness, stamina, and strategy. It’s fun, exciting, healthful, social, and rewarding. You can participate individually or as part of a club in indoor and outdoor events.
HOCKEY
Rink hockey, a sold out spectator sport in the 1992 Olympics, is internationally played in over 50 countries. Each Rink Hockey Region has a Regional Representative who can be contacted for information including seminars, tournaments, equipment etc.
ROLLER DERBY
Roller derby is fun, yet highly competitive as it encompasses individuals of all athletic abilities, sizes, and age. This is a contact sport played by two teams on roller skates, on an elliptical track, in contest called “jams” that can last up to 90 seconds each. There can be women’s, men’s, co-ed, and junior leagues. Most derby leagues use a DIY (do-it-yourself) mindset, and it is common for leagues to participate in fundraising and community service projects.
DEVELOPMENTAL
Most Michigan rinks have developmental and beginner skating classes to help skaters of all ages build skills needed for safe fun and entry level developmental competitive activities in the various disciplines. Ask your rink or club for details about beginner activities.
